How Physical Activity Can Support Mental Health in Teens with Autism
Physical activity can provide benefits that go beyond physical fitness for adolescents with autism. Recent research suggests that being active may also be connected to lower levels of anxiety and depression, while helping young people develop friendships and social-emotional skills.
A 2025 study examined 436 adolescents with autism and looked at their physical activity levels, emotional health, social-emotional abilities, and friendships developed through sports. More than half of the participants were classified as having low levels of physical activity.
Researchers found that adolescents who were more physically active tended to experience fewer internalizing problems, such as symptoms of anxiety and depression. Physical activity was also associated with stronger friendships through sports and better social-emotional skills.
Sports can provide opportunities for athletes with autism to regularly interact with peers in a structured environment. Practicing together, communicating with teammates, and working toward shared goals may help athletes strengthen relationships and become more comfortable navigating social situations.
The researchers found that these friendships may be an important part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. Better sport-based friendships were associated with stronger social-emotional skills, which were then associated with fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression.
These findings do not mean that sports are a treatment for anxiety or depression, or that every person with autism will experience the same benefits. Instead, the research suggests that physical activity can be one valuable way to support the overall well-being of adolescents with autism, particularly when activities match their individual interests and needs.
