Todd Hodgetts: Turning Doubt Into Strength

Todd Hodgetts is an Australian Paralympic shot put champion whose journey shows how sports can provide confidence and purpose. Living with autism and an intellectual impairment, Hodgetts has faced challenges with learning, concentration, and discouragement from others throughout his life.

Growing up, Hodgetts remembers being told that there were things he could not do. One experience with a teacher became especially important to his future. After being told that he could not throw a shot put correctly, Hodgetts decided to practice instead of giving up. He began throwing in his backyard and discovered something that made him feel capable and successful.

Shot put eventually became much more than a sport for Hodgetts. It gave him an opportunity to challenge the negative expectations that had been placed on him. Inspired by sports movies such as Rocky, he developed a mindset centered around persistence and continuing even when something is difficult.

Hodgetts has explained that learning new skills can require extra time, concentration, and repetition. Breaking old habits can also be frustrating for him. Rather than allowing these challenges to stop his progress, he learned to continue practicing and focusing until he developed the skills he needed.

That persistence eventually took Hodgetts to one of the biggest stages in sports. At the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, he became the Paralympic champion in the men's F20 shot put, transforming a sport he once struggled with into one of his greatest strengths.

Hodgetts now uses his experiences to encourage other people with autism. His message is that having autism does not mean someone should stop pursuing their goals. His journey from practicing shot put in his backyard to becoming a Paralympic champion demonstrates what can happen when an athlete is given the opportunity to discover what they can do.
